Pruning refers to the removal of certain branches (limbing), from a tree in order to limit or direct its growth. The term pruning is also used for ornamental arboriculture. A distinction is made between silvicultural pruning, fruit pruning and ornamental pruning.

Pruning is also a natural biological process of abandoning branches, or sometimes part of the crown (crown descent), in order to optimize the tree’s resources and energy expenditure, a process called natural pruning2. It is the process of selecting the branches of a tree, without any human intervention, due climatic events, lack of light, water, or the action of specialized saprophytic mushrooms.
